The University of Michigan’s Index of Consumer Sentiment Down to 63.4 in March

After three months of gains the University of Michigan’s Index of Consumer Sentiment dropped to 63.4 in March, a 5 percent decrease from the previous month. Despite not having been affected by the banking crisis, consumers felt less optimistic due to the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. Despite March’s decline, the index is up more than 25% since June last year, when it hit 50. This was an all-time low for the index, which was created 70 years ago.

The Michigan index tracks consumers’ opinions on the current and future economic conditions in three areas. They include their personal finances, the economy as a whole, and their perceptions of the buying conditions for major consumer durables like automobiles and houses. It also incorporates future inflation expectations.

Despite all the improvements made since the middle last year, the index was still well below its pre-pandemic level of 100. A quarter of consumers believed March was a good month to buy a home. Around 75 percent believed the opposite. This could be due to high home prices or high interest rates. The index score for “buying houses conditions” was 43. This is roughly 100 points lower that its 2019 pre-pandemic level.

Experts aren’t sure how worsening sentiment about home buying will impact homeowners’ or landlords’ willingness to invest in housing improvements. Recent projections by Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies indicate that home improvements will be less popular this year, which is consistent with the declining sentiment around purchasing a house.
